I’m not a System of a Down fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I really like this cover by these three ladies. For as young as they appear to be, their musical skills are impressive.

Tunesday: Nightwish – The Islander

Nightwish is a symphonic power metal band from Kitee, Finland, and was one of the first melodic female-fronted metal bands. Originally fronted by classical-opera-trained Tarja Turunen, a split forced them to find a new singer, the more mainstream-sounding Anette Olzon.

I had the pleasure of seeing them live this past summer, and they were amazing. I’m often disappointed in live performances, but Nightwish was more or less dead-on with the album sound, which gives credit to their talent as musicians. If they ever come to your area, it’s definitely worth your time and money to check them out.

As a veritable connoisseur of free stuff (hey, who isn’t?), I happened to find this rather nice album from Amazon.com’s MP3 section. The entire album is available as downloadable DRM-free MP3 files.

I’m not sure how long it’ll be available for free, so you’d better snag it up now if you’re interested.

SomaFM – My new love

While SomaFM has been around for a while, I never gave it a serious listen until this week, and I must say I’m now hooked, especially on the Secret Agent station. The majority of SomaFM’s stations contain ambient music with little to no lyrics, which makes them perfect for working on the computer, since lyrics tend to disrupt my train of thought.

SomaFM’s default streaming method is through .VLS files, which work seamlessly with VLC, which is my default media player. They have options for other media players on their home page if you want to use something else. I personally like the .VLS files because I can just save the file to my computer and double-click it when I feel like listening.

Because SomaFM is commercial-free and requires no registration, paid or otherwise, they depend solely on user donations. Visit their Support page for information on various one-time and recurring donations. Considering satellite radio runs $8–16/month and isn’t always commercial-free, SomaFM can be a great bargain.

AMOG published its list of The 24 Most Dangerous Driving Songs of All Time, and it’s excellent, to say the least.

Because I liked it so much, I went to Grooveshark and created a playlist of the suggested songs.
